Best Places to Watch Fourth of July Fireworks - Starting with Vashon

There's something extra special about watching fireworks from an island. You either have a front-row seat right on the water, or you're looking out across the Sound at two different shows happening at once. Either way, Vashon does the Fourth pretty well. Here's where to catch the best displays — on the island and off.
Quartermaster Harbor — Vashon
The main event on the island is the fireworks show launched from a barge anchored in the middle of Quartermaster Harbor. The fireworks typically begin after 10pm, and most any stretch of beach along the harbor provides a good vantage point — though heading out early is a good idea. Jensen Point and Dockton Park offer excellent spots with clear sight lines to the show over the harbor. Bonus: from the outer edges of the island, you can catch distant fireworks displays over both Seattle and Tacoma simultaneously — a pretty spectacular perk of island living.
One heads-up: consumer fireworks on Vashon are allowed only between 9am and midnight in unincorporated King County, but they are not permitted in any King County park or Vashon Park District property — including Dockton Park and Jensen Point. Plan accordingly.
Don't miss the other classic Vashon Fourth tradition — the annual hydroplane race on Quartermaster Harbor. It starts early (think 5am early) and is very much a love-it-or-tolerate-it island institution.
Seafair — Gas Works Park & Lake Union
Seafair's Summer Fourth takes place July 4 from 3–11pm at Gas Works Park and South Lake Union Park, both free to attend — though Gas Works requires a pre-booked ticket this year. Both locations feature live music, food and drink, and All-American games before the fireworks light up the sky around 10:15pm. If you're coming over on the ferry, this is worth planning around — it's the biggest show in the region.
Tacoma Summer Blast — Ruston Way Waterfront
Tacoma's 4th of July Summer Blast is the largest free community event in the South Sound, running from noon to 10:30pm at Ruston Way Waterfront with live music, food, entertainment, and fireworks over Puget Sound. The backdrop of Mount Rainier behind the fireworks is genuinely hard to beat. Easy to get to from the Southworth ferry if you want a mainland option closer to home.
Drone Light Show — Des Moines Marina
Something a little different this year — the Des Moines Marina is hosting a free Fourth of July drone light show beginning around 10:20pm, with live music and food trucks throughout the evening. It's a great low-crowd alternative to the big city shows, and it's just a short drive from the Fauntleroy ferry landing.
Grand Old 4th — Bainbridge Island
Bainbridge Island's Grand Old 4th features a traditional pancake breakfast, car show, street fair, live music, and the mile-long Hometown Parade at 1pm along downtown Winslow and Waterfront Park. No fireworks, but it's a charming, low-key way to spend the day if you're looking for something more small-town and family-friendly.
A Note on Safety
Many pets are distressed by fireworks — keep them indoors if you can. Should any pets go missing on Vashon, Haven or Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) can help.
However you spend your Fourth, enjoy every minute of it. This island is a pretty magical place to celebrate — I hope you get to experience a little of that magic this weekend.
